The original form is from Ancient Egypt and all subsequent versions are derived from the original Egyptian pattern. Obelisks were prominent in the architecture of the ancient Egyptians, who placed them in pairs at the entrance of temples. The word "obelisk" is of Greek rather than Egyptian origin because Herodotus, the Greek traveler, was the first to describe the objects. They are associated with Timelessness and Memorialization. Only 29 ancient Egyptian obelisks have survived, 9 of them in Egypt and the rest of them dispersed around the world.
